Photo: The top section of the Enstligenfälle.
A gentle walk around an Alp then down alongside the most impressive waterfall in Switzerland. Done as a trip from Adelboden.
Route: Engstligenalp – Engstligenalp – Under dem Birg.
Length: 7.5km, +75m, -640m.
For more hikes in Switzerland see my list of hikes.
Season: Spring – Autumn. The loop around the Alp is also doable as a winter footpath during winter.
Arrival/Departure: Cable car to Enstligenalp / Bus from ‘Adelboden, Unter dem Birg’. These were bother covered for free by the Adelboden Guest card.
Supplies: Restaurant at the valley and top cable car stations.
Alternate routes/shortcuts: There are various options to head off over passes from Engstligenalp, or extend this walk by carrying on the gentle 5km back to Adelboden.
Exposure/Hazards: The loop on the Alp is flat and totally safe. The descent was a bit steep at times, but never exposed or dangerous.
Notes along the route
The day got off to a very cloudy/foggy start with almost no visiblity, then cleared up as it went along.
We took the cable car up to Engstligenalp and then followed the gentle footpath loop around the Alp. Clouds and Marmots.
Returning to the cable car we headed down the footpath which follows the waterfall down to the base station. The Engstligenfälle are the most impressive waterfalls that I have seen in Switzerland. Even viewed from Adelboden 5km away it is an impressive sight, so going up close is stunning.
Initially the path stays close to the falls, offering a fantastic view of the main fall, then follows the cliff down and away (with an option of taking a detour to the base of the falls).
From Under dem Birg we took the bus back to Adelboden then switched on to the bus down the valley to the train line and home.
