Hike – Männlichen to Kleine Scheidegg (winter)

A snowy take on the classic panoramic hike.

During winter the route is a prepared path; meaning the snow is packed down to a solid surface so you don’t need any equipment beyond reasonably waterproof and warm shoes (so if like me you don’t ski then you can still enjoy the views). It is a bit longer than the summer version as it drops down into the forest to avoid the steeper mountain sides and a few ski areas, but it is still a gentle walk.

    Key Information

    Route: Männlichen – Kleine Scheidegg.

    Length: 6.5km, +243m, -407m.

    Date: 2018-March-24.

    Practical Information

Season: Winter. Arrival and preparation of the path will depend on season times, check the Jungfrau website for more details and the current status.

Arrival/Departure: Cable car from Grindelwald or Wengen to Männlichen / Train from Kleine Scheidegg.

Supplies: Restaurants at Männlichen and Kleine Scheidegg.

Alternate routes/shortcuts: A prepared path also runs down to Wengen from Kleine Scheidegg.

Exposure/Hazards: The path is prepared and controlled so is very safe. The biggest hazards are piste crossings. You will cross a number of ski pistes. These require some care, patience, and the odd bit of bravery to cross. Choose a good time and just move at a constant predictable rate. By far the worst is near Kleine Scheidegg which always has a dense number of skiers – whilst the rest are fairly quiet. Just remember that any crash is probably going to be worse for them so they really don’t want to hit you.

    Notes along the route

Arriving at Männlichen it is worth taking a quick detour up to the strangely themed Royal Walk lookout for the expansive views from the prominent viewpoint.

From the cable car station at Männlichen the path is well marked and easy to follow.

The path is hard to miss.

And mostly separate from the pistes.

The winter route drops down from the ridge and goes through the forest. This is one the best bits – not least because you are far away from the pistes so it is quiet with only a few other walkers around.

The final bit through to Kleine Scheidegg requires regaining some of the height that was lost and crossing a few pistes.
